Can a dead snake bite you?

For venomous snakes like cobras and rattlesnakes, biting is one of the reflexes that can be triggered in the brain even hours after the reptile dies. A man from the United States was bitten by the severed head of a rattlesnake he had decapitated minutes earlier.

This story is perhaps not as uncommon as it may seem, because snakes—like many other reptiles—retain their reflexes even hours after death. The bite reflex is extremely strong in venomous snakes, because their instinct is to deliver one extremely quick bite, move away, and wait for their venom to work.

And a dead snake, even one with a severed head, can bite and release venom by reflex action for up to 90 minutes after it dies. Medicine (antivenom) to counteract the effects of the poison can save a limb or your life.

Dead animals can carry a host of bacteria and viruses that can be passed on to humans and pets. Tularemia is a disease that can be spread to humans via contact with a dead animal.
