Can you wash a Napapijri?

As Napapijri jackets are made from modern recycled materials, some traditional washing techniques don't apply. Most of our water resistant garments should be machine washed at a water temperature of no more than 30 °C or 40 °C, however, and tumble dried at a medium temperature.

Take note. Before getting started with cleaning, turn your jacket inside out and close any fastenings plus zips. Use only a front-loading washing machine and wash on a gentle cycle and low spin with a special down liquid detergent (without bleach). We recommend repeating the rinse cycle to remove all soap residue.

Technically, the waterproof performance of the Rainforest jacket is to withstand 3000 mm H₂O. That means a column of water 3000 mm deep could be borne by the fabric without it leaking through.

Check the care tag on the coat and follow any special instructions regarding water temperature, and cycle speed, and length. Also note any products, such as bleach or fabric softener, that should be avoided. In general, machine-washable winter coats can be washed using cold water and the washer's regular cycle.

Dry the garment in a regular tumble dryer, on a cool setting, or use an iron on a cool setting to revive the DWR finish. This process should revive the DWR. After extended use it may be necessary to use a reproofing product to replenish the DWR finish to the outer fabric surface.

With a jacket that has been washed and dried and is already lumpy, start the washing process again. This time, add tennis balls to the washer and dryer to encourage the break up of any clumps. Down jackets are a versatile and effective piece of clothing when you need lightweight comfort and warmth.

Most Coats Can Be Machine Washed, But Always Read the Label

Don't just assume that your coat is safe to put in the washing machine. As with any other item, always read the label. Every coat should have a tag with washing instructions. Follow them to avoid damaging your coat.

Fasten all buttons and zippers

The metal teeth on zippers can damage other clothes in the washing machine. To minimize the potential of snags and tears, it's best to zip, fasten, and button everything on your coat before washing it. This also helps your coat retain its shape as it tumbles around in the machine.

Fabric and Frequency of Use

Wool coats, leather jackets and down jackets: Try to clean them once a season if you have worn them less often. If you wear them regularly, try to clean them twice a season. Fleece jackets: Clean them after wearing 6 to 7 times. Blazers and suits: Wash them after wearing 4 to 5 times.

Place your item in the washing machine (ideally 1 item per wash) and use a standard non-biological soap or a waterproof washing liquid to add extra protection. If you cannot read the label, you should wash your clothes on a gentle cycle and a slow spin - around 30 degrees is optimal.

Most times, it's dirt and crud that are covering the water-repellent coating, making your jacket soak up water. Also important to note, using household detergents to clean can leave behind residues that attract water, so it's important to use a technical cleaner for items with water-repellent coatings.
