Do snakes feel pain?

Reptiles have the anatomic and physiologic structures needed to detect and perceive pain. Reptiles are capable of demonstrating painful behaviors.

Because of their slow metabolisms, snakes remain conscious and able to feel pain and fear long after they are decapitated.

Glass tanks lack the necessary space for snakes to stretch fully, roam, hunt and do other things that come naturally to them. In recent years, scientists have discovered that just like warm-blooded animals, snakes suffer from anxiety, stress, distress, excitement, fear, frustration, pain and suffering.

Though uncommon, there is research from around the globe indicating that it is possible for venomous snakes to die as a result of injecting their venom into themselves.

While mammals and birds possess the prerequisite neural architecture for phenomenal consciousness, it is concluded that fish lack these essential characteristics and hence do not feel pain.

Snakes can recognize themselves

Research published in the scientific journal Behaviour, shows that garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) can recognize their own chemical cues as distinct from those of other snakes – this is considered the snake equivalent of recognizing yourself in the mirror!

While you might see snakes being sold in pet stores, that doesn't make them “pets.” Snakes are wild animals who belong in their natural habitats, not your home. Wild animals kept in captivity all experience some degree of suffering because they don't experience the freedom they'd have in the wild.

Snakes Need Our Help

When we tear snakes from their homes or breed them and confine them to cramped tanks, we strip away everything that's natural and important to them. They suffer immensely in captivity.

Snakes won't be receptive to your affection—they're wary animals who don't like being held, touched, petted, or passed around. It's stressful for them and puts them at risk of illness and injury, and because they don't whine or yelp, you may not realize that they're hurt.

Contrary to myth, the snake does not generally crush the prey, or break its bones. However, wild anacondas have been observed to cause broken bones in large prey. Also contrary to prior belief, the snake does not suffocate the victim.

Snakes are generally shy and will not attack unless provoked, so it's best to leave them be. If you see a snake inside your home, get all people and pets out of the room immediately. Shut the door and fill the gap underneath with a towel, then call a professional snake catcher for assistance.

If your snake doesn't seem to mind being pet, gentle and occasional handling is fine. Some snakes seem to enjoy a light massage down the length of their body, a head stroke, belly rub, or even a chin scratch, while others do not.

He moves slowly when handled; snakes move quickly when stressed to avoid danger. If he is comfortable around you, he will be relaxed when picked up. Doesn't hyper-focus too often; snakes who feel threatened will focus on what is in front of them such as prey or predator.

It is believed that snakes feel a kind of pain, but not the same kind of pain that humans would feel. PETA, for example, describe snakes as being able to stay conscious and even feel body sensations for a long time after they have been decapitated, and this is because of their slow metabolism.

How to Calm Down a Snake

As explained by plant biologist Dr. Elizabeth Van Volkenburgh, all living organisms perceive and respond to painful touch, but plants do not perceive or “feel” pain the same way that animals do because they lack a nervous system and brain.

It is likely to lack key features such as 'distress', 'sadness', and other states that require the synthesis of emotion, memory and cognition. In other words, insects are unlikely to feel pain as we understand it.

Snakes do not have any sort of social bond, nor the intellect nor memory to recognise and remember an assailant. Apparently Bollywood may be partially responsible for this myth.

With the exception of a few species that have adapted to daytime hunting, most snakes do not see well. Generally they can see shapes but not details. This poor eyesight probably owes to their evolutionary history as burrowers, living in the dark where eyes weren't much use.

The presence of their owner is seen as positive and exciting. But does this qualify as a bond? Not exactly: the snake doesn't acknowledge the smell of their owner as a living being or as a companion. Snakes don't have great memory or sight, so won't recognise the look of their owner.

How Long Do Snakes Live? Snakes reach sexual maturity within two to four years, depending on the species and living conditions. In perfect conditions, adult snakes live anywhere from 20 to 30 years, with natural predators and the encroachment of humans severely limiting the number of years most snakes live.

New findings suggest that when it comes to learning and cognition, the humble snake may be quite a bit more like humans than anyone had imagined. David Holtzman, a neuroscientist at the University of Rochester, has found that snakes have a much greater capacity for learning than earlier studies had indicated.

Not only that, but a snake also makes for a great talking point when guests come to visit. It is important to remember that snakes are a long-term commitment and require specific care requirements.
