Pringle of Scotland was founded in 1815 by Robert Pringle as manufacturers of knitted hosiery. With over a 200-year history, it can be considered one of the oldest luxury fashion brands in the world.

Pringle of Scotland is one of the oldest brand names of the Scottish borders, the iconic birthplace of the British knitwear industry. From the beginning, this was Pringle's home where it became of of the first luxury knitwear manufacturers in the world.

Robert Pringle established Pringle of Scotland in 1815 in the Scottish Borders. Initially the company produced hosiery and underwear, and have been producing cashmere since 1870. Otto Weisz was appointed as the first full-time designer in the knitwear industry in 1934.

The James Pringle company was founded by Pringle's father, who was also called James, and it has no connection with the Pringle of Scotland knitwear brand, whose origins are in the Borders and for whom Tilda Swinton has modelled.

PRINGLE, a surname prevalent in the south of Scotland, a corruption as Sir George Mackenzie conjectures, of the word Palerin or pilgrim. The account of the PRINGLEs states that one Palerin, who had gone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, having settled in Teviotdale, his descendants were called from him HOP PRINGLE.

After seven long years of development, Pringles premiered in Evansville, Indiana in 1968. They were not a hit right away - in fact, they were considered a flop until the 1980s - but soon Pringles became a household brand.

The U.S. Government Weighed In…

The federal government actually stepped in to determine whether Pringles really were potato chips. In 1975, the FDA decided that the company could call Pringles “chips” only if they called out the dried potato ingredient. Instead, Pringles decided to use the term “crisps.”

1967 – 1986

The old Pringles logo featured an oval-shaped man's face outlined in thick black with red and black hair and a heavy mustache. The cheeks were designed using a striped red and white pattern. The wordmark in yellow and black was placed beneath the man's head.

To make their uniform design, Pringles uses a special recipe, which doesn't actually include potatoes. Instead, they're made with something called “dehydrated processed potato.” They also contain corn, rice and wheat.

According to the detailed book 'The Records of the Pringles', the surname Hoppringill, or Pringle, dates from the reign of Alexander III of Scotland (1249–86) and is one of the oldest names of the Scottish Border region.
