Is AOT based on WWII?

The zeitgeisty manga and anime Attack on Titan is no different, taking inspiration from Germanic imagery and illustrations of the Jewish Exodus, Axis powers of World War II, and the Holocaust.

Attack on Titan (Japanese: 進撃の巨人, Hepburn: Shingeki no Kyojin, lit. 'The Advancing Giant') is a Japanese dark fantasy anime television series, adapted from the manga series of the same name by Hajime Isayama.

Attack on Titan seems to take place in Germany since many of the names are Germanic. (Jäger =Hunter in German) However a map in the recent manga chapters has shown a world that doesn't look like ours at all. In fact, the place where they live looks like a upside down Madagascar.

The culture of the walls is definitely based on Germany and Europe, but not the location. Geographically no, but one can draw a lot of cultural and historical similarities.

The Attack on Titan manga draws a lot of inspiration from Norse mythology, with the Titan god Ymir a direct reference to the very first Norse giant.

Plot. Eren Yeager is a boy who lives in the town of Shiganshina, located on the outermost of three circular walls which protect their inhabitants from Titans. In the year 845, the first wall (Wall Maria) is breached by two new types of Titans, the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan.

Noerdlingen, which is said to be the inspiration behind the famous "Attack on Titan" series, is a small medieval town surrounded by well-preserved walls (although surely not made of Titans) with beautiful towers and covered parapet paths.

Most of the character in the series have German last names, such as Ackerman and Yaegar. Germany was a big influence on Hishayama's inspiration to create the story. For example, the size of the territory behind the walls is the size of Germany.

The diversity of the cast means that the author had to find creative ways of naming the characters, and they did so by pulling names from Germanic, English, and Asian history.

In anime. The main city featured in Attack on Titan is based on Nördlingen.

Hajime Isayama, the mangaka of the critically-acclaimed series Attack on Titan, draws from the real world for inspiration, including the Titans.

Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan is a classic example of an anime series that drew heavily from true historical events. Much like the anime series mentioned above, it did so in a subtle manner, i.e., through implications.

Odin has many names and is the god of both war and death. Half of the warriors who die in battle are taken to his hall of Valhalla. Eren Yeager is an Eldian, or a Subject of Ymir. He is a member of a race of people who can turn into Titans, courtesy of their direct relations with Ymir Fritz, the Founder. In the real world, I Eren would be of Germanic descent. What is your opinion of Eren Jaeger?

Year 845: The Fall of Wall Maria

Marcel is eaten by Ymir's Titan after the first night of their journey, and Ymir regains her humanity after having stolen his Jaw Titan power.

Witnessing his mother's death was traumatic enough, but seeing countless allies die in front of him was a major factor in Eren's fall to the dark side. Several of his friends died when the Titans invaded Trost.

Shiganshina: "Shigan" means "time" in korean and "aspiration" "desire" or "historical insight" in Japanese. "Shina" is an offensive term for the country China used by Japanese people.

Levi or Lévi is a Jewish surname. It is a transliteration of the Hebrew word לוי. Another spelling of the name is Levy (or Lévy). According to Jewish tradition, people with the surname have patrilineal descent from the Levites of the Bible.

Eren Yeager is 2/4 German, 1/4 Russian and 1/4 Turkish. Many people confuse Eren being Turkish or German, since 'Eren' is a Turkish name and 'Yeager' a German last name, meaning hunter. So we know that Eren must have some Turkish blood in him. Let's look to his parents: Grisha Yeager and Carla Yeager.

Levi is an Ackerman (his mother's side), but as far as we know is not Asian. Given that we don't know who his father is (Isayama has deemed him irrelevant), I suppose there is a possibility that he could be Asian, but it is highly unlikely because Mikasa is canonly known as the last Asian*.
