Is Pringle a Scottish brand?

Robert Pringle established Pringle of Scotland in 1815 in the Scottish Borders. Initially the company produced hosiery and underwear, and have been producing cashmere since 1870. Otto Weisz was appointed as the first full-time designer in the knitwear industry in 1934.

Our home and heart is in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders. This area has a rich heritage of knitting traditions and manufacturing, and we are proud to still make many of our famous cashmere pieces and more intricate designs here.

PRINGLE, a surname prevalent in the south of Scotland, a corruption as Sir George Mackenzie conjectures, of the word Palerin or pilgrim. The account of the PRINGLEs states that one Palerin, who had gone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, having settled in Teviotdale, his descendants were called from him HOP PRINGLE.

Mackie's crisps were launched with some spectacularly Scottish flavours – like Haggis & cracked black pepper, along with more traditional favourites like Sea Salt or Mature Cheddar & Onion. Mackie's crisps were a huge success in Scotland and abroad.

Pringles is an American brand of stackable potato-based chips invented by Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1968 and marketed as "Pringle's Newfangled Potato Chips". The brand was sold in 2012 to Kellogg's. As of 2011, Pringles were sold in more than 140 countries.

It dates from the 12th century reign of Alexander III of Scotland and is derived from an area near Galashiels. The clan have a long association with the woollen industry, and were squires to the Earls of Douglas in the 14th century. Several ladies in the Pringle clan were Prioresses of the Convent at Coldstream.

The emblem is also referred to as the 'lion rampant', a traditional term used to describe the lion's stance; depicting the animal in profile with its forepaws raised. Historically a 'lion rampant' has been used on the coat of arms of royal heraldry throughout the UK and Europe.

There's actually a longstanding theory that the name comes from Mark Pringle, whose work Procter & Gamble cited in a patent, but that hasn't been confirmed. There's another theory that they could be named for two P&G advertising employees, both of whom lived on Pringle Drive in Ohio, but who really knows.

The brand offers a wide variety of flavours, from classic Salt & Vinegar and Cheese & Onion to more unique options like Prawn Cocktail and Steak & Onion.

One of the most expensive crisps in the world is the Truffle Chips, which are made by the Swedish company St. Erik's Brewery. These are made with rare ingredients, including Matsutake mushrooms and truffles, and are packaged in a box that resembles a jewellery box.

It's not a surprise that crisps are the UK's favourite savoury snack. In an article published in April 2022, The Daily Telegraph wrote that the most popular crisp flavours in the UK were Walkers Cheese and Onion, followed by Beef Monster Munch, Walkers Salt and Vinegar and Pringles Original.

What is the primary reason Pringles are so much more expensive than other popular potato chip brands? The primary reason is that Pringles aren't potato chips. Depending on the flavor, they're about 42% potato, with flours, oil, salt, sweeteners, emulsifiers, flavors, MSG, modified food starch, et al.

Whilst Pringles don't fully meet the definition of a crisp here in the UK almost everyone I know calls them crisps. No one here will call them chips purely because chips are like what Americans call fries BUT are thicker and are best cooked in a deep fat fryer.

The U.S. Government Weighed In…

The federal government actually stepped in to determine whether Pringles really were potato chips. In 1975, the FDA decided that the company could call Pringles “chips” only if they called out the dried potato ingredient. Instead, Pringles decided to use the term “crisps.”

Kellogg decided to purchase Pringles to complement its growing snacks division, which already include Keebler, Cheez-it, and Special K crackers. The acquisition more than doubles Kellogg snacks' presence abroad, Citi analyst David Driscoll wrote in a note to investors.

James Pringle is quite separate from the Pringle of Scotland knitwear brand which has its origins in the Borders. The similarity and confusion have led to arguments and legal actions over the years.
