What are the two types of surrealism?

We can divide Surrealism into two main types; veristic art and automatism art.

Automatism concentrates more on feelings and is less analytical compared to veristic surrealism. As its name implies, automatism focuses on the automatic way in which the images of the subconscious reach the conscience; the images simply refer to the artists' psychological states rather than planned symbols.

Artists such as Joan Miró and Max Ernst used various techniques to create unlikely and often outlandish imagery including collage, doodling, frottage, decalcomania, and grattage.

The characteristics of surrealism include strange images or bizarre juxtapositions, unconsciousness as a valid reality, dream-like artwork or symbolic images, automatism techniques to create random effects, distorted figures or biomorphic shapes, depiction of perverse sexuality, and chance or spontaneity.

Surrealist techniques

Among these were frottage (rubbing with graphite over wood or other grained substances) and grattage (scraping the canvas)—both developed by Ernst to produce partial images, which were to be completed in the mind of the viewer.

The second style of Surrealism was abstract, based on imagery without specific reference to natural shapes, and was largely dependent on forms generated by the unconscious.

Automatism was a group of techniques used by the Surrealists to facilitate the direct and uncontrolled outpouring of unconscious thought. In his first Surrealist Manifesto, André Breton provided a dictionary-style definition that made automatism virtually a synonym of Surrealism.

The realist claims that the truth of a theory is the reason for its success, i.e., the theory would not be successful, if it is not true. The surrealist, on the other hand, claims that the world is responsible for the success of a theory, i.e., the theory would not be successful, if the world behaves differently.

Picasso never stopped renewing his representation of reality. Following his collaboration with Diaghilev for the Russian ballet and influenced by Apollinaire, then André Breton, the artist gradually shifts to an art associated with surrealism beginning in 1924.

Surrealism aims to revolutionise human experience. It balances a rational vision of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. The movement's artists find magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the disregarded and the unconventional.

There are five common themes in surrealistic artwork: juxtaposition, scale, repetition, metamorphosis, and impossible actions. Often these themes are used together, and sometimes it is difficult to tell what category an image would fall into.
