What is the 4 foot rule in excavation?

The close proximity rule (sometimes referred to as the “4-foot rule”) is a safe work practice adopted by JJ White Inc. for PPE. Under the close proximity rule, anyone who is working within 4 feet of another person performing a task that requires a higher level of PPE, must also wear that higher level of PPE protection.

The rule requires employers to protect workers from fall hazards along unprotected sides or edges that are at least 4 feet above a lower level.

The “6-foot” rule is a general rule of thumb in the construction industry. Basically, it requires that fall protection be provided when work occurs at heights of six feet or greater above a lower level.

Trenches 5 feet (1.5 meters) deep or greater require a protective system unless the excavation is made entirely in stable rock. If less than 5 feet deep, a competent person may determine that a protective system is not required.

On steep properties, the slope of the ground around the footing could affect the footing's stability. The 7-Foot Rule states there should be at least 7 feet between the bottom of the footing and daylight.

The 6-foot rule. Subpart M requires the use of fall protection when construction workers are working at heights of 6 feet or greater above a lower level.

5 feet deep trenches must have a protective system in place. Trenches greater than 4 feet must have a ladder for exit and egress. Ladders should extend at least 3 feet from the excavation for easy access and easy exit. Place excavated materials 2 feet away from the edge of the excavation.

For excavations greater than 20 ft depth, the slope or bench shall be designed by a registered professional engineer. Sloping means a method of protecting employees from cave-ins by excavating to form sides of an excavation that are inclined away from the excavation so as to prevent cave-ins.

What you need to do. The law says you must prevent danger to workers in or near excavations. To maintain the required precautions, a competent person must inspect excavation supports or battering at the start of the working shift and at other specified times. No work should take place until the excavation is safe.

We recommend digging it about one foot wide and 18 inches deep. The wider the trench, the easier it is to collect water and the lower the chance of clogging. Your trench needs to be lined with water-permeable landscaping fabric in order to prevent damage caused by grass and plant roots.
