What is the Children of Eden about?

Synopsis. Based on the first 9 ½ chapters of The Book of Genesis, CHILDREN OF EDEN is about the age-old conflict of parents and children through the generations, first Father (God) with Adam and Eve, then Adam and Eve with their sons Cain and Able, and finally Noah and his family.

Loosely based on the first five books of the Bible, the play opens with the creation story in the Garden of Eden before moving on to the tale of Cain and Abel. The second act of the play deals with the story of Noah's Ark.

The book ends with a staggering but ironic cliffhanger in which Ash has been sentenced to death because of a mistake realized that she is the firstborn, not Ash. Rowan, along with her new friends in a system called the Underground which rescues second children like her, conjures a scheme to save him.

Stephen Schwartz wrote the biblical musical Children Of Eden in 1989, during the period between Rags and Pocahontas. Unlike those two projects, he wrote music and lyrics for this retelling of the Noah story, just as he did in the Godspell and Pippin days.

For the very first time in the history of Salve Regina's theatre program, 22 students will be performing on Broadway in a concert production of “Children of Eden,” a musical by the famed Stephen Schwartz, at the Lincoln Center in Feb. 2024.
