What makes an art Lowbrow?

It is a populist art movement with its cultural roots in underground comix, punk music, and hot-rod cultures of the street. It is also often known by the name pop surrealism. Lowbrow art often has a sense of humor – sometimes the humor is gleeful, sometimes impish, and sometimes it is a sarcastic comment.2

The purpose of the lowbrow movement was to take an unorthodox approach to art and to completely defy its "rules". This resulted in pushback from significant individuals and organizations in the art industry.

This alternative art movement found its most congealing participant in one of America's most opprobrious and maligned underground artists, the painter, Robert Williams. It was this artist who brought the term “lowbrow” into the fine arts lexicon, with his ground breaking 1979 book, The Lowbrow Art of Robt.

Lowbrow, also known as pop surrealism, is a groundbreaking and unconventional art movement that emerged in the late 1960s in Los Angeles and the West Coast. Characterized by its fusion of high and low culture, the movement has produced a wealth of compelling, evocative, and often controversial works.

Comedies that rely heavily on insults, physical gags, and jokes about bodily functions can usually be described as lowbrow. Forms of entertainment such as operas and Shakespearean plays are typically regarded as highbrow — the opposite of lowbrow. Surprisingly, they can have their fair share of lowbrow humor as well.

Certain types of art are considered sophisticated, cultured, and respectable: like opera and classical music. Anything highbrow is usually intellectual in nature, and people who appreciate such things are also called highbrows.

Instead they turned to sources such as Hollywood movies, advertising, product packaging, pop music and comic books for their imagery. Modernist critics were horrified by the pop artists' use of such 'low' subject matter and by their apparently uncritical treatment of it.

Art forms like painting, sculpture, and music were held in higher regard, and therefore became the accepted art forms to be appreciated by those with high taste. Conversely, anything that was available to the masses and easily comprehensible by all was regarded as a lower form.

Origin of Lowbrow Art

The term "Lowbrow" itself was coined by artist Robert Williams, who used it to describe his own artistic style. Williams, along with other like-minded artists, felt disconnected from the mainstream art scene, which heavily favored abstract expressionism and minimalism.

The terms “highbrow” and “lowbrow” come from phrenology, the nineteenth-century science of regarding the shape of the skull as a key to intelligence. A “high” forehead meant intelligence; a “low” one—not so much. However, this so-called “science” led to notable episodes of racism and prejudice.

Often, low culture and 'lowbrow' are derogatory terms. They are used to highlight the lack of sophistication and of the tastes of people outside of the elite classes. Examples of low culture come from food, entertainment, sports, and shopping.

Highbrow usually refers to intellectual or cultured tastes and interests. This is usually in the realms of art, literature, and music but could be applied to anything, really. On the flip side, we use lowbrow to describe something more mainstream, less refined, or even downright crass.

It's commonly said that classical music and jazz is highbrow, while pop and gangsta rap is lowbrow. Put simply, it is arrogant, ignorant and elitist to trash anything considered lowbrow because it's classified as such.

Rates of attendance at fine arts events have declined significantly over the past few decades. According to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), only 33% of Americans attended a “benchmark” cultural event even once in 2012—down from 39% in 2002 and 41% in 1992.

By creating paintings or sculptures of mass culture objects and media stars, the Pop Art movement aimed to blur the boundaries between "high" art and "low" culture. The concept that there is no hierarchy of culture and that art may borrow from any source has been one of the most influential characteristics of Pop Art.

Neoclassicism. Almost the opposite of pop art in terms of inspiration, this style is one that arose in the second half of the eighteenth century in Europe, drawing inspiration from the classical art and culture of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, which is not uncommon for art movements.
