Some of Baur's ashes were buried in a Pringles can at his request. Baur's children said they honored his request to bury him in one of the cans by placing part of his cremated remains in an Original flavor Pringles container in his grave in suburban Springfield Township.

Pringles is an American brand of stackable potato-based chips invented by Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1968 and marketed as "Pringle's Newfangled Potato Chips". The brand was sold in 2012 to Kellogg's.

NPR's Scott Horsley reports. SCOTT HORSLEY: If it weren't for Frederic Baur, Pringle might still be just a street name in suburban Cincinnati. Back in the 1960s, Cincinnati-based Procter and Gamble, where Baur worked, developed a potato chip made from dehydrated flour and shaped like a saddle.

But this man is no zoo animal; he is a person like the rest of us—and his name is Julius Pringles. While embodying many looks over the years, Julius Pringles has always sported a recognizable bushy mustache that if you look closely enough has always resembled two Pringles crisps put together.

Because Pringles aren't actually made with real potato—the recipe calls for dehydrated processed potato—the FDA ruled in 1975 that Pringles could only be called "chips" if they provided a disclaimer, identifying them as "potato chips made from dried potatoes." What is the primary reason Pringles are so much more expensive than other popular potato chip brands? The primary reason is that Pringles aren't potato chips. Depending on the flavor, they're about 42% potato, with flours, oil, salt, sweeteners, emulsifiers, flavors, MSG, modified food starch, et al.

You may already be aware that PepsiCo's Frito-Lay division is responsible for Fritos and Lays Potato Chips. However, the company also owns other beloved brands like Ruffles, Doritos, Tostitos, Miss Vickie's and SunChips. Frito-Lay began as two separate entities in the early 1930s.

Pringles are not baked. They are fried. And they're fried in a specially made apparatus. Each dough-val is placed inside a mold called "a saddle," and then run through hot frying oil, giving the crisps their distinct, stackable shape and golden-brown hue.

The federal government actually stepped in to determine whether Pringles really were potato chips. In 1975, the FDA decided that the company could call Pringles “chips” only if they called out the dried potato ingredient. Instead, Pringles decided to use the term “crisps.”

To make their uniform design, Pringles uses a special recipe, which doesn't actually include potatoes. Instead, they're made with something called “dehydrated processed potato.” They also contain corn, rice and wheat.

Pringles Original does not contain any ingredients made from milk and is suitable for those following a vegan diet or with milk allergies. Wheat flour is now also an ingredient across all Pringles varieties and, accordingly “wheat flour” is specified on the ingredient list.

Pringles isn't high on the list of what we consider healthy chips, but their reduced-fat version is a welcome alternative. It contains fewer calories, fat, and sodium than the original recipe, but keeps the same amount of carbs and seasoning.

What is the most popular Pringles flavor? Truly, it depends on who you ask. Statistically, some of the most popular Pringles flavors that are usually almost always in production include Original, Salt and Vinegar, BBQ, and of course, Sour Cream and Onion.

According to Pringles, the brand's chips and cans were made smaller back in 2016 to fit in with a new manufacturing facility that has different equipment to the original US factory, which caused controversy at the time.

In addition to dehydrated potatoes, rice flour and wheat starch, Pringles contain a host of ingredients designed to get your taste buds and the hunger centre of the brain tingling. The biggest culprits are the holy trinity of addictive junk food — fat, salt and sugar.
